The fuel is used to run engine test benches and prototype vehicles as BMW continues its diesel engine development — proving that decarbonisation and cutting-edge automotive R&D can go hand in hand.
Press release:
The agreement covers the supply of fossil-free fuel to BMW Group's development site in Steyr.
Biofuel Express Austria, one of Austria's leading suppliers of HVO100 Renewable Diesel, has entered into a fuel supply agreement with BMW Motoren GmbH. Since June 2026, the Vienna-based company has been supplying fossil-free fuel to the BMW Group site in Steyr, where it is used to operate engine test benches and prototype vehicles for diesel engine development.
"HVO100 significantly reduces the carbon footprint of existing vehicles while allowing companies to continue using their existing infrastructure and proven powertrain technologies. Supplying HVO100 to the BMW Group's development site in Steyr sends a strong signal in favour of technology neutrality and openness to renewable solutions. It also demonstrates how HVO100 can be seamlessly integrated into existing vehicles and infrastructure," says Susanne Nohel, Chief Operating Officer at Biofuel Express Austria GmbH.
HVO100 is a renewable diesel fuel produced entirely from waste and residual feedstocks and can be used as an alternative to conventional fossil diesel. Compared with traditional diesel, it can reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 90%. "Against the backdrop of today's geopolitical developments, many companies in the transport and mobility sector are asking how they can decarbonise their vehicle fleets quickly, practically and cost-effectively. As a bridging technology, HVO offers the advantage of being immediately available while being less exposed to international price volatility than conventional fossil fuels," Nohel adds.
Biofuel Express Austria is among the leading suppliers of fossil-free fuels in Austria and is a subsidiary of Biofuel Express, the Scandinavian market leader in the distribution of renewable and synthetic fuels. The agreement with BMW Motoren GmbH further strengthens the company's market position in Austria.
